I first met Clair and Peter when they were tearing up the dance floor at Clair’s sister, Keri’s wedding to Neil at Tower Hill Barns a couple of years ago. So when they asked me to be their wedding photographer at Shiningford Farm I knew that it was going to be one big party.
It was a hot one for Clair’s marriage to Peter. I nearly ended up as a puddle with a camera by the end of the day but what a day it was. There was so much happening for me to photograph. Shiningford Farm is such an amazing wedding venue in Ashbourne, nestled in the Derbyshire countryside. The cottages are converted stables and the amazing country manor house is a grade ii listed building. Clair and Peter held their wedding in a tipi giving the whole day a rustic, boho feel.
Getting ready at Shiningford Farm
On the morning of their wedding, Clair and Peter both got ready in the cottages at Shiningford Farm. I met up with Clair first who was having her make up done and looking very relaxed with her bridesmaids before getting into her beautiful dress from Rock The Frock, Cheshire. Then I took the short walk across the courtyard to photograph Peter who was getting ready and enjoying a beer with his two best men before greeting his wedding guests.
Clair and Peter’s outdoor Humanist Wedding Ceremony
Clair and Peter’s wedding ceremony really was something else. They tied the knot outdoors under the shade of the Shiningford Farm trees. Their humanist ceremony was really personal and so much fun to photograph. It was conducted by their brother-in-law, Neil and even involved a gin drinking ceremony! That is one tradition I could get on board with!
Dancing the night away
After an amazing day Clair and Peter partied into the night to their wedding band, The Cassettes. There were so many awesome moments to photograph on the dance floor and so many wedding guests throwing amazing moves out.
I absolutely loved being Clair and Peter’s Shiningford Farm Wedding Photographer. Here are some of my favourite images from their incredible day.
How did you both meet?
Neither of us remember meeting! We know it was in Hula Tiki in the Northern Quarter so Peter is convinced it involved some smooth witty chat up line – something worked!
What was the marriage proposal like?
Very chilled, at home on my birthday. I thought Peter was reaching under our bed for my birthday present and I didn’t even notice he was down on one knee.
How did you find wedding planning?
We absolutely loved it!! We enjoyed making every aspect of the day about us. My tips would be to not over complicate things, go with your gut and don’t feel forced to do anything you don’t want to. Looking back on our wedding now we love how much it reflected us and all of the small details worked so well.
Why did you choose Shiningford Farm for your wedding venue?
When we first got engaged we agreed to 5 must haves at our wedding:
2. No curfew
3. An honesty bar
4. Humanist ceremony
5. Have the Rolling Stones play (we failed on this one!)
We found it really difficult to find a venue that had a relaxed atmosphere and gave us the freedom we wanted.
When a friend told me about Shiningford Farm we fell in love and literally visited the one venue.
What was your favourite part of your wedding day?
It’s hard to pick but if forced, our ceremony. We smiled non stop from start to finish and love the photos you captured of each aspect of the ceremony – gin, fist pumps and power ballads!
What song did you have for your first dance and why did you choose it?
Imagine Dragons – On Top Of The World
It was bouncy and we thought we could get away with dancing to it – we failed!! It was also the song of our holiday just before we got engaged so meant something to us too.
Wedding supplier shout outs:
You – obviously!!! In all seriousness, you make everyone feel so comfortable on the day and capture every aspect of the day perfectly. We love looking back and re-living the day.
The band [Cassette Band] were so good, I’ve lost track of how many people complimented the band after the day.
My wedding dress – I got it from Rock the Frock Cheshire. Helen is amazing and has an incredible selection of dresses that are a little different
Peter is a graphic designer so I should probably give him a shout out for all of the invites and signage
My sister, Keri offered to make our wedding cake – something she’s never done before and it was epic!
We asked our brother in law married us and it was one of the best decisions we made! Neil had never done anything like it but used the humanist structure and created the most incredible, personal ceremony. We didn’t have any sneak previews of the ceremony or the readings so got to enjoy it all on the day for the first time – I’d recommend this to everyone!
